Now Corp. and Now Telecom Company Inc. have turned to Finnish tech player Nokia to develop their 5G network in the Philippines.

According to a filing, the Now Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Nokia that provides for the “expansion” of Now’s current broadband network through standalone 5G technologies.

The agreement also provides for the creation of a commercial framework agreement by developing several 5G use cases that may be applicable to the Philippine market.

“This Now-Nokia 5G collaboration agreement will bring with it the era of multi-gigabit broadband Internet in the telecommunications, media and technology markets of the Philippines. Now’s strategy is clear: expand its current guaranteed service to high-end markets through 5G fixed wireless access and extend this engaging customer experience to consumers through 5G mobile cellular broadband service ”, Mel V. Velarde, founder and president of the Now Group of Companies, said.

He added that Now’s standalone 5G network will offer “enhanced mobile broadband and ultra-low latency” that can support virtual and augmented reality applications, 8K video streaming, and other use cases for businesses, governments and homes.

“By not having legacy networks, Now’s standalone 5G network will rise above the competition. With Nokia as our technology partner, we are confident that Now and its customers will be successful, ”said Velarde.

Nokia currently has 133 5G commercial contracts around the world.

“We are delighted to support Now in realizing the full 5G vision. Autonomous 5G, with its high speed, low latency performance and edge computing will improve business processes, bring new applications and benefits to consumers and the industry at large, ”said Andrew Cope, Country Manager, Nokia Philippines.

“We are confident that our market-leading technology will play a crucial role in setting the right conditions for 5G to become a success in the Philippines.”
