For much of the past week, there was a real run in the UK for the No. 1 spot on the album chart, as vocalists Michael Ball and Alfie Boe and BTS competed for another leader. The two contenders had already achieved champions in the past, and according to the Official Graphics CompanyIt was very tight for a while … but in the end, the two legendary singers came out on top, while the South Korean men’s band were forced to settle for second place.
While it may be a bit disappointing for many BTS fans that their new album BE begins at n. 2, remains a great victory not only for the team itself, but for all the musicians from their home country … and it highlights once again how far apart the other South Korean stars are.
BE It is BTS’s fourth UK top 10 album, an incredible sum for any act. In fact, this latest win is only the fifth release by a South Korean musical act of any kind to break through to the top of the rankings. It joins several other titles of the same name … as well as a recent win by a competitor who recently made history with another smash hit.
Among the five projects by South Korean musicians that have risen to the top 10 on the UK album chart, four are by BTS and two have reached the top spot. The seven member band Soul Map: Persona Y Soul Map: 7 both led the charge for a short time (in 2019 and 2020, respectively), while Love yourself: tear The same act broke barriers when it peaked at number 8 in 2018.
Just a few months ago, Blackpink, a female quartet from South Korea, also appeared in the highest arena on the UK album chart with what was labeled their full-length debut. The album. That effort went to No. 2, losing the throne by just one spot.
BE It may not have made it to the top third of BTS’s charts (at least not yet), but it is another important moment for them and their die-hard fanbase, and it shows that there is a growing appetite for music performed on. Korean. Until recently, such locations were unthinkable, and now these best-selling albums are becoming almost commonplace … and that’s a wonderful thing to see.
