MANILA (TO UPDATE) —A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Masbate early Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The tremor, which occurred at 4:23 am, was a replica of the 6.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the province and left one dead in August, according to Phivolcs director Renato Solidum.
“Maybe it’s not too damaging if that’s all that happened, but because there was something in early August, maybe the ones that have broken something get bigger,” he told ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo.
(It won’t do much damage if there was no previous earthquake in August. Damage to buildings may get worse).
Solidum warned of landslides as the ground has been saturated by rains from a series of typhoons that flooded the region since last month.
“So far we have not received any special damage from the earthquake this morning,” he said.
(So far, we have yet to receive reports of unusual damage from today’s earthquake.)
The latest earthquake, which occurred 11 kilometers southeast of the city of Cataingan, was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 16 kilometers, Phivolcs said.
The quake was not expected to cause damage and aftershocks, he added.
A “weak” or Intensity III tremor was felt in the city of Masbate while a “slightly felt” Intensity II was felt in the cities of Irosin and Magellan in Sorsogon.
