Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 28) – From a public service announcement reminding the public to take extra precautions during the holiday season, the new texting to subscribers now discourages any form of gathering unless absolutely necessary.
“Ride only when absolutely necessary. You better be careful. Wear face shield and mask, wash hands, and social distancing”Reads the latest text message from the National Telecommunications Commission and the Department of Information and Communications Technology.
[Translation: Gather only when really necessary. It’s better to be careful. Wear face shields and face masks, wash hands, and practice social distancing.]The message was in contrast to an earlier notice that did not discourage the holiday season, although it recommended that attendees increase ventilation by turning on electric fans and opening windows. He also suggested outdoor locations.
The Health Department strongly opposed the advice, saying the department was wrongly cited as a source. Maria Rosario Vergeire, health spokesperson, warned that the Christmas holidays can be “super broadcast” events.
Instead, DOH recommends online parties or face-to-face meetings exclusively for household members.
The main telecommunications providers in the country, Globe Telecom and PLDT / Smart, clarified that they are only following orders from NTC and DICT.
“Globe, as a mobile operator, will only send text messages with proper authorization from our regulator. The content of the SMS blast was provided by the DICT, ”Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s senior vice president of corporate communications, said in a statement sent to CNN Philippines.
Meanwhile, Sarah Azucena-Reodica of PLDT-Smart Corporate Communications said the NTC asked them Friday night to change the context of the text explosion.
“The NTC had sent us an updated message,” he said, citing the new notice.
Rex Remitio of CNN Philippines contributed to this report.
