Presidential spokesman Harry Roque on Saturday justified the crowd at an event he attended on Bantayan Island, saying it was held outdoors and health protocols were observed.
As shown in the images that have gone viral, Roque was in the tourist destination of Cebu addressing a large number of people, who according to critics appeared to be violating anti-coronavirus regulation.
Although the people in the crowd were wearing protective masks, they seemed not to observe social distancing.
In a statement, Roque said that the conditions of the event were beyond his control.
“The activity in which they saw me speaking before a crowd was organized by the local government, which had no control as a guest,” said the presidential spokesman.
“I was later informed that local officials mentioned in interviews that they did not expect the large participation of the people as well.
“Be that as it may, they advised the public to wear masks and there was general compliance, as seen in the images that came out.”
Roque said he made sure not to come into contact with the people present at the event.
“The venue was outdoors as it was held on the beach, but I had to reiterate to the audience to stay in their masks,” he said.
“As a precaution, I observed the physical distancing and reminded those present to observe minimum health standards. Also, I did not shake hands and put on a mask.”
It was not the first time that Roque has received criticism regarding the COVID-19 protocols.
In July he defended his trip to Subic, where he swam with dolphins, saying “wala pong nalabag.”
Earlier this month, Roque was caught on video singing in a public place.
