MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Air Force (PAF) grounded its fleet of Huey helicopters after a medevac crashed in Lanao del Sur on Thursday (November 26).

Lt. Col. Aristides Galang said that grounding the entire UH-1 fleet after an accident is standard operating procedure.

Meanwhile, Bell 412 helicopters would fill the void left by the Hueys grounding.

“We have many other types of aircraft,” Galang said.

Like the Hueys, Bell 412 helicopters are used for a variety of missions including search and rescue, passenger transport, and disaster relief.

Galang said the duration of the Huey’s grounding is still uncertain.

Bad weather on Thursday forced a PAF Huey to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff in the town of Madalum after picking up four soldiers injured in a bomb blast.

A member of the helicopter crew was injured. One of the soldiers who was being airlifted and seriously injured in the explosion died.
