With open-air cinemas slowly becoming the norm in the Philippines amid the pandemic, a local shopping mall announced the opening of a floating cinema in December.
Mall chain Megaworld featured the McKinley Hill Float-In Cinema on its Facebook page on November 20. The video of the ad showed people on gondola rides that can be found at the Venice Grand Canal Mall in Taguig City, an establishment inspired by Italy’s Grand Canal, while watching a movie on a giant screen.
“We can’t keep it a secret any longer! We are very excited to bring the first and only floating cinema to the Philippines this December, ”the Megaworld post read. No further details have been released at the time of this writing.

Most cinemas in the Philippines remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. This prompted shopping centers such as SM Pampanga and SM Mall of Asia to open open-air drive-ins in July and September, respectively.
Some cinemas in the city of Iloilo and the province of Rizal have reopened with strict social distancing guidelines. Meanwhile, mall chains like Megaworld and SM also allow private parties to be seen in select cinemas.

Last month, the Film and Television Classification and Review Board (MTRCB) said it expects the cinemas in the provinces to reopen in December. “At this time, some have started to slowly reopen, including SM drive-ins … Hopefully it will recover by the end of the year,” MTRCB president Rachel Arenas said during a Senate hearing.
The Philippines has been under community quarantine since March 15. In September, the country broke the record for having the longest coronavirus-related lockdown in the world.
