Donald Trump has announced his latest presidential pardon: Michael Flynn. The disgraced former national security adviser pleaded guilty to the FBI during the investigation into the Russian meddling, but Trump has now released the man from his charges.
The President wrote on Twitter: “It is a great honor for me to announce that a full pardon has been granted to General Michael T. Flynn.”
This pardon is the first of others planned by the outgoing president before leaving office. Paul Manafort, Trump’s 2016 campaign chairman, and George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, could also receive pardons.
In other news, Trump’s legal team has continued to press to claim that massive voter fraud occurred during the 2020 election. During a scheduled “hearing” in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Rudy Giuliani claimed that Trump may have won Virginia, despite lose the state by millions of votes. The president also took the time to call the audience and again make unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud.
White House Chief of Staff and Press Secretary Celebrate Flynn’s Pardon
Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, was a person in the president’s inner circle to celebrate the news that Trump pardoned Michael Flynn on Wednesday.
“Congratulations to General Flynn, a well deserved day for an American patriot,” Meadows wrote. “What the left has done to him and his family these last 4 years must not be allowed to happen again in the United States.”
What Meadows did not mention was that Flynn, the former national security adviser, was ousted from the White House by Republicans, not Democrats, after reports circulated that he discussed the sanctions with Russian diplomats, something about which he lied to Vice President Mike Pence. and others.
Flynn later pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States in December 2017.
Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany also welcomed the news that Mr. Flynn received a pardon calling it “justice” in a tweet.

President Donald Trump has invited Republican lawmakers involved in today’s “hearing” in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to the White House tonight, CNN reports.
Two sources told the news organization that Trump is scheduled to meet them in the west wing of the White House shortly. It was not revealed whether the press would be allowed or not.
This comes after Trump made no public appearances on Wednesday.

Manhattan District Attorney Appeals Dismissal of Paul Manafort’s Fraud Charges in New York State Court
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that it was appealing a decision by the New York Superior Court to dismiss charges against Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman.
Manafort was indicted in New York State court with residential mortgage fraud and related charges in March 2019.
A state judge dismissed those charges in December 2019, saying they overlapped with bank fraud charges Manafort also faced in federal court. Dual criminality in the US prevents someone from being tried twice for the same or similar charges in court.
Last month, a New York appeals court upheld the state judge’s decision to dismiss the charges, but the Manhattan district attorney has since decided to appeal that ruling.
