The House Health Committee approved the proposed Health Acquisition and Storage Act on Wednesday to ensure access to critical drugs, vaccines, devices and materials during health emergencies.
Representative Angelina Tan, author of the bill, believes the measure will make the country’s public health system more resilient.
“The Covid-19 pandemic (coronavirus disease 2019) has demonstrated the need to preposition critical and strategic pharmaceuticals and medical devices, as well as the supply of raw materials. The country must be proactive in its response to public health emergencies, ”he said.
Tan added that the pandemic took the country and the world “off their feet” as it affected the global and local production and distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and the supply of raw materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients and packaging materials. .
The legislator stressed that the country must prepare for infectious disease control, noting that the Philippines is prone to disasters.
“Given this situation, preparing the country in times of public health emergencies is significantly necessary, such as during pandemics and natural disasters,” Tan said.
The bill will create the Office of Health Acquisition and Storage that will have the task of storing, preserving and facilitating the release of adequate quantities of pharmaceutical products, vaccines, devices and materials that save lives in times of public health emergencies.
It will be established under the Department of Health.
