“We are pleased to announce the selection of the feature film, ‘Mindanao’, as the Philippines’ official entry to OSCARS 93rd category of international feature films,” the film body said in its publication.

“Congratulations and best wishes!” added.

“Mindanao”, in addition to its millennial war themes, tells the story of a Muslim mother (Judy Ann Santos) who awaits the return of her soldier husband (Allen Dizon) while taking care of her daughter who is ill with cancer.

For her performance in the film, Santos was awarded Best Actress at the 41st Cairo International Film Festival in 2019. “Mindanao” also won the Henry Barakat Award for Best Artistic Contribution at the same festival.

The Mendoza-directed film also took home most of the awards during last year’s 45th Metro Manila Film Festival, including best picture.

The 93 Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are scheduled for April 25, 2021.
