MANILA, Philippines – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday (November 23) welcomed the US delivery of weapons systems worth $ 18 million that senior AFP officials say would fuel the Philippine campaign. to end terrorism.
“We may have been successful in counterterrorism operations, especially in Marawi, with ordinary ammunition installed on our legacy aircraft,” AFP spokesman Major General Edgard Arevalo said in a statement.
“But with the arrival of these missiles and munitions, we are confident that they will greatly boost our campaigns and contribute to the global momentum to fight and defeat the terrorists,” he said.
US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien handed over the war kit to Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.
at ceremonies at the office of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila.
The donated package included 24 MK-82 bombs; 1 box / packaging MK-82; 100 optically guided wireless tow missiles launched from tube 2A Bunker Busters; 12 improved target acquisition system and support team. It is part of Trump’s promise to provide missiles to the Philippines made in a phone call with President Rodrigo Duterte last April.
Arevalo said that “smart munitions with such capacity and precision will greatly help the AFPs to rid the country of terrorist threats.”
AFP chief General Gilbert Gapay thanked the defense departments of both the Philippines and the United States “for negotiating and sealing the deal.”
O’Brien’s visit to the Philippines followed his tour of Japan and Vietnam.
