MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Agriculture (DA) issued a temporary ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds and poultry products from Japan and the United Kingdom following an outbreak of a strain of avian influenza in the two countries.

In separate memorandum orders recently issued by the Clerk’s Office, the Prosecutor’s Office said that poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen are covered by the import ban.

According to an official report submitted to the World Organization for Animal Health, an outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) H5N8 affecting broilers was reported in the city of Mitoyo and Kagawa in Japan.

The same bird flu virus was detected in Frodsham, England, which affected broiler breeders.

The Secretary of Agriculture, William Dar, ordered the immediate suspension of the processing and evaluation of the application, as well as the issuance of sanitary and phytosanitary permits (SPS) for the importation of said products.

Dar said poultry shipments with SPS import authorization issued on or before November 9 would be allowed, provided the frozen poultry meat has a slaughter or processing date of 21 days before the HPAI outbreak on November 3. October or earlier.

All shipments will still be subject to veterinary quarantine rules and regulations.

In addition to Japan and the United Kingdom, the DA ordered a ban on imports of poultry from Australia, Brazil, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine and the United States.
