It’s been almost two months since BTS delivered that speech, and the music they spoke about with such passion has finally been shared with the world in the form of their latest album. BE (Deluxe Edition), released on Friday after much anticipation among its fans, known as ARMY. Instead, “Life Goes On” takes a different tack, offering a lifeline to fans going through a difficult time amid the isolation and uncertainty of COVID-19 with the reassurance that people around the world, including seven of the best known and beloved men in South Korea, are spending it with them.
“For everyone, life has stopped due to COVID-19,” the eldest of the group, Jin, said on Thursday. “We feel frustrated and sad, but these emotions are not always melancholic. It seems that the world has stopped, but life goes on ”.
On the single, the BTS members sing and rap about a summer lost to confinement and an endless storm, albeit not literally. “One day the world stopped without warning,” Jungkook sings at the beginning of the song. “Spring didn’t know how to wait / He wasn’t even a minute late.”
It’s a perhaps unintentional allusion (though probably not, BTS are known to be self-referential kings) to their 2017 single “Spring Day,” a fan favorite and notably a mainstay on the group’s live playlists for the past few months. . That song uses the metaphor of a seemingly eternal winter to describe the heartbreak of missing someone so desperately, and the fear that they will leave before the eventual heat of spring. “Morning will come again,” they sing on “Spring Day.” “Without darkness, no season is eternal.” It is a message that is still reflected, three years later, in “Life Goes On”.
