Filipinos’ English proficiency falls to 27th in world rankings

Filipinos’ English proficiency has dropped seven places in the global rankings of international language training company Education First.

The Philippines, which ranked 20th last year, was ranked 27th in the 2020 English Proficiency Index with a score of 562 out of 700. The Netherlands secured first place with a production of 652.

Meanwhile, the English proficiency from the Philippines ranked second in Asia. Singapore, which ranked 10th in the world index, ranked first in Asia with 611 points.

From 2016 to 2018, the Philippines remained in the top 15 of the global index, ranking 13th, 15th and 14th, respectively.

In addition, the competition band from the Philippines was “high,” according to the report.

According to EF, those with a high proficiency band can do the following:

  • Make a presentation at work
  • Understand television shows
  • To read a newspaper

The index was based on surveys conducted in the form of an online questionnaire with the participation of more than 2.2 million people from 100 countries and territories.
