Pfizer Says Final Results Show Vaccine 95% Effective
The biotech company Pfizer said on Wednesday, November 18, that a full study of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine showed it to be 95% effective.
Pfizer said the vaccine did not have serious side effects and that the company will request emergency use authorization from US regulators “in a few days.”
The announcement came as coronavirus cases are on the rise in the US and other parts of the world, raising hopes of ending the life-changing pandemic around the world.
“The study results mark an important step in this historic eight-month journey to present a vaccine capable of helping end this devastating pandemic,” said Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer.
“With hundreds of thousands of people around the world infected every day, we urgently need to bring a safe and effective vaccine to the world,” he added.
Pfizer had said last week after preliminary analysis that its product was more than 90% effective.
On Monday, November 16, another biotech company involved in the race to develop a vaccine, Moderna, said its own vaccine was 94.5% effective, according to a preliminary analysis.
