Globe Telecom accelerated the deployment of 5G base stations in the Philippines, with high-speed service offered in parts of 17 cities and the operator targeting 80 percent coverage of Metro Manila by the end of the year.

In a statement, CTIO Gil Genio said that the population coverage of the Manila metropolitan area is now around 66 percent. “We have a very active 5G development in Metro Manila” and we are installing additional sites to expand the coverage area, without revealing the number of installed base stations.

Genio said the company has also started rolling out 5G sites in six cities in Visayas and Mindanao, two of the country’s top three island groups. Metro Manila is located on the island of Luzon.

The 5G launch is part of the operator’s three-point network expansion strategy, which includes cell site deployments, LTE updates on multiple frequencies, and a nationwide push of fiber to the home.

Postpaid subscribers can sign up for 5G plans and choose from six compatible phones from Samsung and Huawei.
