MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education apologized in a statement released on Friday for a Facebook post showing part of a physical education module that embarrassed actress Angel Locsin by calling her “an obese person.”
The statement was signed by Roger F. Capa, superintendent of the Occidental Mindoro Division of Schools, as this office has jurisdiction over the teacher involved in the charge, who had been retired.
According to a Bandera report, the teacher belongs to the Abra de Ilog National High School in Occidental Mindoro.
“We would like to express our sincerest apologies to concerned individuals who may have been offended or harmed by this incident,” Capa said. “The Department of Education does not tolerate or condone any act of bodily shame, ad hominem or any similar act of intimidation in both the physical and virtual environment.”
Capa appealed to the public, however, to stop attacking the teacher.
“This Office had already contacted the teacher in question and collected data from him. Rest assured that much attention will be paid to this matter. Meanwhile, we call on the public to avoid any ad hominem attack as this mistake alone will not define you as a person, ”he said.
Capa also clarified that the module that contained the publication of corporal shame was not developed or evaluated in the central office of the DepEd.
“This material is an assessment done by the teacher for a MAPEH 10th grade class for the purpose of measuring specific competencies in the learning area,” he said.
MAPEH is an abbreviation for Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health.
“Assessing learning outcomes in a particular subject is a primary responsibility of a teacher. Developing tools for such assessments is an academic freedom that every teacher enjoys. This without prejudice to the fundamental principles of the construction of tests that involve social content in which one of our professors may not have met the standard, ”added Capa.
