MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) said it canceled the tender for more than P4 million of funds allocated for the purchase of Christmas ham and cheese for its Christmas celebration.

This comes after DepEd was asked to explain the controversial post on its website that featured an invitation to tender for “P4,278,000 of ham and cheese supply and delivery for the DepEd Central Office holiday celebration.” .

DepEd’s director of public service affairs, June Arvin Gudoy, responded to reporters from a Viber group: “The call for tenders has been canceled. It was a regular acquisition, but it is inappropriate at this time when our employees are severely affected by recent disasters. “

DepEd removed the “invitation to bid” from the Christmas ham and cheese offer on its website this Saturday.

The education department had reallocated its funds for the victims of the recent typhoons Rolly and Ulysses, as well as its COVID-19 efforts, Gudoy explained.

“Other regional and division offices that were not affected by the typhoons have also collaborated to help our teachers and students on the ground,” Gudoy said.

“After Bicol, our undersecretaries for field operations and administration will also visit our schools in Cagayan as soon as possible to verify the needs of our schools. The well-being of our teachers and students continues to be our priority and even more so at this time, ”the DepEd official also said.
