CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) recommends stricter border control as cases of active coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the city rose to 209 on 13 November 2020.

Councilman Joel Garganera, EOC’s deputy director of implementation, said Mayor Edgardo Labella convened them and the Central Visayas Regional Police Office (PRO-7) on Friday to discuss the interventions the city would need to make to control the growing trend of COVID-19.

“As the mayor said in his press conference yesterday morning, we are going to enforce tighter border control. Last night, Generol Ferro (head of PRO-7) attended the critique session together with our City Health doctors and the contact tracing team, so he was able to personally assess the situation, ”he said.

The EOC’s main concern now is the influx of workers returning to ports, including the five seaports under the jurisdiction of Cebu City.

The city government wants stricter implementation of health protocols, verification of requirements and documents, and proper coordination with the barangays.

“In line with this, we are going to have a meeting at 2 pm at PRO-7 to discuss border control, especially our port areas, taking into account the other restricted areas in other provinces and municipalities. The island of Cebu has many ports of entry, so there really are cases na naa mo sulod diri, without coordination with the city and the barangay. We are going to coordinate with PNP, CPA, PCG and we will also invite the host LGUs of the ports ”, said Garganera.

Land borders at the city’s 11 main entry points will be strengthened with quarantine checkpoints to ensure that only workers with the proper documents can enter the city.

In previous statements, Labella has already said that she would not allow job seekers to enter the city from now on to avoid the increase in cases.

Strengthening the borders will be discussed at a meeting on the afternoon of today, November 14, 2020, and the police will implement these border controls within the day or tomorrow. / Dbs
