Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 13) – The National Bureau of Investigation will launch its own investigation into the murder of Judge Ma of Section 45 of the Manila Regional Court of First Instance. Teresa Abadilla, who was fatally shot inside her office this week.
In a statement on Friday, the Secretary of Justice, Menardo Guevarra, said that he ordered the investigation “considering that the incident has implications for the personal safety of our judges and magistrates.”
“Although Judge Abadilla’s death appears to have stemmed from an internal problem with her court clerk, I have ordered the NBI to carry out a parallel investigation,” Guevarra said.
Police identified Clerk Amador Rebato as the suspect. Witnesses said a restless Rebato suddenly pulled a firearm from his handbag and shot Abadilla in the head on Wednesday.
Police said Rebato later shot himself as well.
Supreme Court President Diosdado Peralta ordered the court administrator to further toughen security protocols in all courts. He said that Abadilla’s death is a great loss for the judiciary, calling her “an upright and highly competent magistrate.”
Abadilla served as a legal assistant on the Supreme Court for more than a decade before being appointed a RTC judge, Peralta recalled.
