The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday issued Department Memorandum 2020-0381 or the “Interim Guidelines on Classification and Management of Covid-19 Disease Severity” to update its disease severity classification by including ” moderate “to ensure alignment with international definitions.

Following the World Health Organization reclassification of symptom severity among Covid-19 cases, DOH said the following classifications will be used in case reporting from health facilities and reporting units for diseases:

● Mild illness: Covid-19 symptomatic patients with fever, cough, fatigue, anorexia, myalgia, other nonspecific symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, or loss of smell or taste before the onset of respiratory symptoms , but no signs of pneumonia or hypoxia
● Moderate illness: children, adolescents, or adults with clinical signs of non-severe pneumonia (cough, dyspnea, or respiratory rate of 21 to 30 breaths / minute for adults and cough or shortness of breath and rapid breathing or chest stretching for children) .
● Severe illness: adolescent or adult with clinical signs of severe pneumonia or severe acute respiratory infection; o child with clinical signs of pneumonia accompanied by central cyanosis, severe respiratory distress, general danger signs such as inability to breastfeed or drink, loss of consciousness or seizures, or rapid breathing
● Critical illness: patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, or septic shock.

Additionally, Covid-19 patients who did not develop any signs or symptoms will be labeled “asymptomatic.”

“This reclassification will simplify the classification of patients: asymptomatic and mild cases of Covid-19 will be isolated and managed in temporary treatment and monitoring facilities, while moderate, severe and critical cases will be admitted to hospitals,” said DOH .

This reclassification, per DOH, will also be reflected in relevant DOH communication materials as of November 12, 2020, including the daily case bulletin and other subsequent reports.
