CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines – Mayor Edgardo Labella has banned Christmas carols from city streets and neighborhoods to help prevent the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
“In order to ensure that the City’s programs and measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 are maintained, Cebu City sees the need to impose a ban on Christmas carols in the streets within Cebu City within the community quarantine period, “Labella said in her Executive Order No. 104.
“We hope our people understand it. We need to ban Christmas carols in homes, in vehicles and on the streets. Like it or not, the virus is still very present, ”he said.
The mayor ordered the City Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification and Improvement team staff and Cebu City police to implement the order.
Ordinance
He cited the anti-begging ordinance, implemented in 2015, which prohibited Christmas carols from roaming city streets.
The ordinance imposes a P500 fine or imprisonment of a maximum of five days for offenders. One option is for the offender to perform eight hours of community service or be imposed any of the three penalties, at the discretion of the court.
The city’s Emergency Operations Center and the Department of Health in Central Visayas previously recommended not allowing Christmas carols this year to maintain the city’s success in fighting COVID-19.
Once labeled a COVID-19 hot spot in June, Cebu City managed to slow the spread of the virus after more than two months with the help of national officials.
As of Tuesday, the city had recorded 10,322 COVID-19 cases, with just 173 classified as active.
