MANILA, Philippines— Who was Judge María Teresa Abadilla, the Manila Regional Court of First Instance judge who was shot and killed by her court clerk?
For the president of the Supreme Court Diosdado Peralta, Abadilla was a great loss for the Judicial Power.
“I personally know her for being an upright and highly competent magistrate,” she said in a statement, adding that she knew the judge and her family because they were from the same province of Ilocos Norte.
“I offer my sincere condolences to the mother, Manang Susan Samonte Abadilla, and to Judge Abadilla’s siblings and all their friends,” he said.
Abadilla, daughter of the late Colonel Rolando Abadilla, an intelligence officer during the Marcos administration, worked her way up the ladder, starting as a paralegal on the Supreme Court for more than a decade. He has worked in the offices of retired Chief Judges Lucas Bersamin and Teresita Leonardo-De Castro.
“I am very saddened by the tragic murder of Judge Teresa S. Abadilla at her workplace. She was like family to me and my wife. She was a hardworking judge. His death, which made no sense, brings us all down. I offer my condolences to the Abadilla family and pray that their deep sorrow over the tragedy is tempered by the idea that we share in their irreparable loss, ”Bersamin said in a statement.
Peralta said that although security protocols already exist in all the courts, “I have ordered the Court Administrator to employ stricter measures to prevent incidents like these from happening again.” [ac]
