SMART Clark Giga City – Meralco warmed up for the PBA Philippine Cup quarter-finals by defeating NorthPort, 80-73, at the end of the knockout round on Wednesday at the University of Angeles Foundation gym.

Five players finished in double figures for the Bolts led by second-year guard Bong Quinto with 14 points, eight rebounds and two assists in the victory that closed the team’s record at 7-4.

While Meralco finished tied with several other teams at the top end of the standings, the quirk in the ratio denied it a two-time lead to win in the playoffs.

Now the Bolts are preparing to win two games in a row in the quarterfinals, whichever team their opponent is, in hopes of advancing to the semifinals of the All-Filipino conference for the first time.

“You have to win two games to get to the semi-finals, that’s what it comes down to. Hopefully, if you can get that first win, you put a little pressure on the team that has the two-time advantage to win,” he said. Meralco manager Norman Black on the eve of his 63rd birthday.
