MANILA, Philippines – Former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has no basis to seek Deputy Supreme Court Justice Marvic Leonen’s inhibition of the vice-presidential election protest he filed, just because the latter voted against his father’s burial in the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

That sums up the statement released Monday by Samahan ng Ex-Detainees sa Detensyon in Arest (Selda), a group of former political detainees during the martial law regime of then-President Ferdinand Marcos.

“Bongbong Marcos’s recent attempt to remove South Carolina Associate Judge Marvic Leonen is the act of a sore loser and spoiled brat; An independent voice cannot be excluded in the process because it disagreed with the Supreme Court’s approval of the burial of Ferdinand Sr.’s hero and voted based on their conscience, ”said Selda.

Leonen is in charge of the electoral protest presented by the young Marcos against Vice President Leni Robredo, his opponent in the 2016 presidential elections.

Leonen became a speaker in the case after a raffle had him replace Associate Judge Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa in 2019.

Marcos filed a petition with the SC last Monday asking Leonen to back down due to his bias towards the Marcos family.

Selda echoed the sentiments of other observers who criticized Marcos for acting like “a spoiled brat” and urged the SC to drop the petition.

“This petition by Bongbong Marcos shows the classic intolerance of the Marcos dissent. It is malicious, it has no basis, it is Marcosian, “said Selda, adding that he hoped that” in this case the truth would prevail. “

In his petition, which was supported by the Attorney General’s Office, Marcos said: “It is clear that we will never get justice if Leonen is around because of his hatred of me and my family. This is evidenced by his past decisions where he unequivocally condemned me and my family. It is obvious that he is doing everything in his power to suppress the true story behind the 2016 vice presidential elections, disenfranchising millions of Filipinos who wanted nothing more than credible elections. “

After Robredo defeated Marcos in the 2016 presidential elections by a small margin of around 200,000 votes, Marcos filed an electoral protest alleging that there was electoral fraud.

But in 2019, the SC sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) carried out recounts that resulted in Robredo obtaining 15,000 more votes in the pilot counting areas that Marcos himself chose.

Robredo had a simple response to OSG’s expression of support for Marcos’s request: lols – a common expression used on social media, derived from “laughing out loud.”

In her statement on Monday, Selda said: “Vice President Leni Robredo won over Bongbong Marcos in the 2016 elections because people see through the historical lies and schemes of the Marcoses to politically rehabilitate their bloody record of injustices they committed. . These acts are desperate stunts by a sore loser and a spoiled brat. “
