MANILA – Filipino elements feature prominently in the latest Christmas ad published by Disney UK on Monday.
Titled “From our family to yours,” the three-minute animated short tells the story of a grandmother, her granddaughter, and the family traditions that bind them through the years.
The video begins in 1940, in a city lit by colorful star-shaped Filipino Christmas lanterns called parol. A young woman waits outside, on cobblestone streets that resemble Vigan in Ilocos Sur.
Her father finally arrives, prompting the girl to do the “hand”. The Philippine practice is to put the hand of an old man on the forehead as a sign of respect.
They then give him a Mickey Mouse stuffed toy, which he kept and passed to his young granddaughter. In 2005, the main character was known as Lola, the Filipino word for grandmother.
Now based in a snowy city, Lola takes her Mickey Mouse toy and a sewing kit, and makes a talk with her grandson. Years passed and the granddaughter became a busy woman, slowly drifting away from her Christmas tradition.
This saddened Lola who, at one point, dropped the Mickey Mouse plush and went upstairs to her room after her granddaughter left the house instead of joining her.
Upon returning home, the granddaughter slowly realized what she had done while taking the toy and recalls her bonding moments with Lola by looking at her framed photos in the living room.
He took a photo of young Lola hugging the now discarded Mickey Mouse plush as the scene passes into the morning.
The next day, Lola, still visibly sad, comes downstairs and is surprised to see the room decorated with parols, taking her back to her childhood in the Philippines.
His granddaughter appears and gives him a red box containing his precious Mickey Mouse plush toy, and the two share a comforting hug as they renew their bond.
The caption at the end showed that the ad is Disney’s way of supporting the Make A Wish charity.
