Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 8) – The Philippine government has pledged to further boost its ties with the United States under the incoming term of President-elect Joe Biden.

President Rodrigo Duterte congratulated Biden on Sunday on his election as the 46th CEO of the United States. Duterte said his administration looks forward to “working closely” with his soon-to-be counterpart.

“The Philippines and the United States have long-standing bilateral relations and we are committed to further improving relations with the United States under the Biden administration,” Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said in a statement, following the announcement of Biden’s projected victory.

“We look forward to working closely with President-elect Biden’s new administration based on mutual respect, mutual benefit, and a shared commitment to democracy, freedom and the rule of law,” he added.

The Democratic bet Biden obtained the 270 electoral votes necessary, according to CNN projected on Saturday (Sunday in Manila), to win the race for the White House and oust his Republican rival and current president of the United States, Donald Trump. However, the official statement has yet to be made.

Biden, 77, in his victory speech, vowed to unite, heal and strengthen America, regardless of the political parties and beliefs of its citizens.

The Trump campaign, on the other hand, previously said it would require a vote recount in the state of Wisconsin.

‘Shared ideals’

Vice President Leni Robredo also congratulated Biden and his running mate, Vice President-elect of the United States, Kamala Harris, on their victory at the polls.

Robredo, in a tweet, said that the victory of the Democratic duo is an “affirmation of the shared ideals on which the long friendship between our two nations is based: democracy, civil rights, faith and inclusion.”

“I pray for your success,” added Robredo.

Malacañang previously said that the Philippines does not expect major changes in bilateral relations with the United States anytime soon, as Duterte is seen as fostering warm moments with whoever wins the presidency.
