MANILA, Philippines – The Human Rights Commission (CDH) has assured that it has already sent a team to investigate the homicide inside a hospital in the Rizal province of a man who was recovering after surviving an alleged extrajudicial murder attempt.
CHR spokeswoman Jacqueline De Guia said Thursday that her office in Region IV has already dispatched a rapid response team to investigate the death of Vincent Adia, a patient who was shot twice while still in the care of a hospital. in Angono.
Reports on Wednesday showed that Adia managed to survive by playing dead even after being shot three times in the face. But after he was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment, a gunman entered the emergency room and shot the victim dead.
“[CHR] strongly condemns this brutal murder inside a hospital. The gall of the attack is absolutely reprehensible: a desecration of the very facility where the sick and wounded are supposed to be treated and saved. In the midst of suffering in this period of the pandemic, it is disheartening that extrajudicial executions still persist, ”De Guía said.
“For our part, CHR Region-IV has sent a rapid response team to investigate the case and monitor it until its end,” he added.
The HRC also called on the state to act on this issue, as vigilante-style killings continue to occur amid assurances from the government that it is willing to cooperate to improve the human rights situation in the Philippines.
“We once again insist on our repeated request to the government to specifically address the continuing atrocities and killings of vigilantes,” said De Guía.
“With the recent expression of openness by the government to cooperate with international mechanisms to improve the human rights situation in the country, we hope and hope that the cases of extrajudicial executions will truly be stopped and addressed with the greatest urgency,” he added.
Adia’s story first appeared on social media after hospital staff who witnessed the event shared what happened.
The shooting was later confirmed by the Angono Police. Police Chief Major Richard Corpuz said the incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday.
The Rizal Provincial Police Directorate also assured that an investigation is underway.
Even if the administration received some praise for exposing the country’s huge drug problem, activists and human rights defenders have raised concerns about the allegedly violent approach to the war on drugs.
President Rodrigo Duterte has already come under fire for his alleged disregard for human rights, and some countries are seeking greater scrutiny of the war on drugs.
However, the president has repeatedly asserted that there is no EJK in the Philippines; rather, the killings are the result of drug gangs fighting for territory and control. [ac]
