Sources: The NBA is close to agreeing on December 22 to start a new season

After an awkward report last week that the NBA and the players were far apart on the league’s proposal for a 72-game 2020-21 regular season and the December 22 start date, it now appears they are close to a deal before Friday’s deadline, according to ESPN. Adrian Wojnarowski.

The National Basketball Players Association plans to hold a formal vote of the team’s player representatives on Thursday night, and sources told ESPN that everything is moving toward an agreement on the start of the season before Christmas. The NBPA is holding team conference calls this week, including several on Wednesday, detailing discussions with the league about a salary escrow for players in the 18% range over the next two years, sources told ESPN.

Sources say a deal is expected, although escrow numbers are still being negotiated. If all goes well, training camp will begin Dec. 1 and a moratorium will be lifted, allowing the league to reopen before the Nov. 18 draft.
