When Taiwanese pop group F4’s scheduled reunion was announced earlier this week on China’s Jiangsu TV “Night Festival 1001” broadcast, there was a palpable wave of excitement among longtime fans. The quartet consisting of Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, Vic Chou, and Ken Chu formed and signed with Sony Music Taiwan after they starred in the 2001 hit Taiwanese drama together. This generated considerable confusion among viewers who tuned in to the live broadcast, commenting that Wu’s bandmates looked “2D” or “CGI-ed.” Images posted on social media by the audience at the venue watching the concert live confirmed that only Wu was physically present on stage. Wu also walked the event’s red carpet alone. Such a unique arrangement was likely due to Covid-19 border restrictions that prevented Yan, Chou and Ken from traveling to the event, even though Wu was already in China.
Nonetheless, the virtual reunion marked a special moment for F4, as well as for the group’s fans: this was F4’s first public appearance “together” since 2013, which coincidentally also took place on a Jiangsu television show.
