When Taiwanese pop group F4’s scheduled reunion was announced earlier this week on China’s Jiangsu TV “Night Festival 1001” broadcast, there was a palpable wave of excitement among longtime fans. Meteor garden which exploded in popularity throughout Asia. However, the proposed “reunion” during the October 30 concert on Jiangsu TV turned out a little different than what many fans expected.

The “1001 Night Festival” concert featured live audiences in China and thousands of viewers who tuned in via live broadcast from around the world to see the boy band behind award-winning Mandopop albums like Meteor shower Y Fantasy 4ever. While all four members appeared to appear on stage together during the live broadcast, only Los Angeles-born Vanness Wu (wearing a green jacket) was performing live at the venue. For online streaming, the prerecorded performances of his bandmates were virtually screened as holograms to “share” the same stage as him.

This generated considerable confusion among viewers who tuned in to the live broadcast, commenting that Wu’s bandmates looked “2D” or “CGI-ed.” Images posted on social media by the audience at the venue watching the concert live confirmed that only Wu was physically present on stage. Wu also walked the event’s red carpet alone. Such a unique arrangement was likely due to Covid-19 border restrictions that prevented Yan, Chou and Ken from traveling to the event, even though Wu was already in China.

Nonetheless, the virtual reunion marked a special moment for F4, as well as for the group’s fans: this was F4’s first public appearance “together” since 2013, which coincidentally also took place on a Jiangsu television show.
