A suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed on Thursday after a brief clash with soldiers in Basilan.

The commander of the Western Mindanao Armed Forces Command, Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., said the terrorist identified as alias Botak died after an encounter in Barangay Felang, Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan around 4 p.m.

Botak was a well-known supporter of ASG deputy leader Furuji Indama, who was killed during the encounter with the troops last September.

“The neutralized personality was on a motorcycle along with two of his companions when they were intercepted by operational troops of the 101st Infantry Brigade and the 18th Infantry Battalion, and the shooting occurred,” Vinluan said.

According to the commander of the Basilan Joint Task Force, Colonel Domingo Gobway, the troops were able to recover Botak’s body, an M60 machine gun and a motorcycle at the scene of the crash.

Vinluan promised that the army will continue its offensive against the terrorist group.
