MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte approved an investigation into the Philippine ambassador to Brazil, Marichu Mauro, who was recalled on charges of mistreating a domestic worker.

Duterte’s former aide and now Senator Christopher “Bong” Go confirmed this in a statement Thursday.

“The impartial investigation will be conducted in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law, in particular the Foreign Service Act of 1991,” Go said.

Duterte’s spokesman, Harry Roque, made a separate announcement about the development during his regular press conference at the Palace.

Foreign Secretary Teodoro “Teddy Boy” Locsin Jr. previously requested Duterte’s approval to initiate an investigation on the matter.

Mauro was instructed to return immediately to the Philippines after a video showed her “berating and mistreating the staff at her home.”

Locsin promised that the Foreign Relations Department’s response on the issue will be “severe to the fullest extent of the law.” He added that the corresponding charges will be brought against Mauro if his guilt is proven.
