DOTr Moves Cashless Toll Collection to December 1

In response to the outcry from motorists, who have yet to install radio frequency identification (RFID) stickers on their vehicles, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) today pushed back the deadline for cashless collections on toll roads from 2 from November to December 1, 2020..

This means that the cashless mode of payment, or the use of 100 percent of electronic payment systems, on the highways will begin on December 1.

However, the deadline will no longer be extended beyond this date.

“Secretary Arthur Tugade allowed the extension to give motorists, especially infrequent users of toll roads, more time to comply with the department’s order,” explained the Executive Director of the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) , Abraham Sales.

The extension should also address the long lines currently being experienced on toll roads in the rush to obtain RFID tags.

Previously, the TRB, an agency attached to the DOTr that has oversight over toll road operations, said that Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) and San Miguel Corporation (SMC) are equipped and ready to implement the Order, but have extended the installation of RFID stickers after November 2, 2020.

Previously, DOTr issued Department Order 2020-012 directing the full implementation of cashless toll collections on highways and major toll roads.

This is in line with the government’s push to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and avoid traffic congestion at toll plazas.

Motorists who fail to comply with the government’s mandate will be detained and issued a fine.
