Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 26) – Thousands of people were evacuated from various areas affected by La Quinta as the typhoon continued to threaten the country.

In an interview with CNN Philippines’ New Day on Monday, Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara said more than 44,000 people were evacuated across the province on Sunday when Quinta (international name: Molave) struck the area.

Quinta previously made landfall on Malinao and San Miguel Island in Albay.

“[There are] strong winds and most areas are flooded but this time it has now subsided … I called all the mayors and they will introduce me to the [latest situational] report, “Bichara said.

Bichara added that some local roads were impassable due to flooding and falling trees. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines also had to temporarily shut down all of Albay’s power supply amid threats from Quinta.

The Bicol Regional Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management said 33 barangays were affected by the weather system. Meanwhile, 569 people were stranded in various seaports due to canceled trips.

Meanwhile, a total of 40,499 households in 12 Maguindanao villages felt the impact of Quinta, according to the Maguindanao provincial government. Repackaging of relief items for affected households is underway.

The Philippine Coast Guard also responded on Sunday to a maritime incident involving the Philippine-flagged cargo ship MV Good Fortune after it encountered engine problems while sailing in rough seas off Ubay, Bohol. All members of the cargo ship’s crew were found safe during the search and rescue operation.

As of 8 am on Monday, Quinta has maintained its strength in its passage through the vicinity of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Sign No. 3 was raised in several areas of Luzon, while classes at all levels were suspended in most areas of Metro Manila.

The typhoon had also previously made landfall over Torrijos in Marinduque, the city of San Andrés in Quezón province, and Pola in Oriental Mindoro.

The PAGASA meteorological office said Quinta will leave Philippine territory through the Occidental Mindoro provinces on Tuesday.
