After many delays, the Philippine Soccer League is scheduled to begin its 2020 season on Wednesday at the National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
The PFL start date of October 25 was delayed due to numerous people testing positive for COVID-19 within the league bubble in Seda Nuvali. The league also said weather triggered by Tropical Depression Fifth was another reason for the delay.
Five players and a coach from two different clubs tested positive after undergoing an RT-PCR swab test upon entering the bubble on October 21. Three additional people tested positive after antigen testing was done on close contacts.
Since then, the PFL said in a statement that they had conducted another round of antigen testing on all players, coaches and staff. All tests were negative. Games and Amusement Board Chairman Abraham Mitra posted on Twitter that the league will start without the players who originally tested positive.
“This is a great moment for everyone in the soccer community,” said PFL President Mariano Araneta. “We appreciate the collective effort of the PFF, the clubs and, most importantly, the Board of Games and Entertainment and the government of the city of Santa Rosa, Laguna.”
The PFL is expected to release a modified schedule on Monday.
