Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 25) – More areas in Luzon and the Visayas will experience heavy rains as Tropical Storm Quinta (international name: Molave) has further intensified to become a severe tropical storm, the PAGASA meteorological office said Sunday.

The tropical cyclone No. 2 warning signal was raised at noon Sunday over Masbate, including Buriao and Ticao Islands, central Quezon and Occidental Mindoro, including Lubang Island. Other areas previously placed under the cyclone warning sign were Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Quezon sur, Batangas, Marinduque, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro and Northern Samar.

Areas under sign # 2 will experience winds in excess of 61 kilometers per hour (kph) and up to 120 kph in at least 24 hours. Winds can cause mild to moderate damage to exposed communities, while coastal and marine waters are dangerous for small boats.

Meanwhile, Signal No. 1 has been erected over the following areas in Luzon: the rest of Quezon, Laguna, Rizal, Cavite, Metro Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, the southern portion of Zambales, and the Calamian Islands.

In the Visayas, the areas under Signal No. 1 are: the northern part of Samar, the northern part of Eastern Samar, the northern part of Capiz, Aklan, the northern part of Antique and the northeastern part of Iloilo.

Areas under Sign No. 1 will experience 30 to 60 km / h winds that can cause little damage to high risk structures. They may also experience occasional gusts in the next 36 hours.

PAGASA last located Quinta 180 km east of Virac, Catanduanes, with stronger maximum winds of 95 km / h and gusts of up to 115 km / h in its westward advance.

Quinta will make landfall later today

Quinta is expected to make landfall over the Catanduanes-Albay-Sorsogon area on Sunday afternoon or evening. Before making landfall, it can even escalate into a severe tropical storm, according to PAGASA.

Weather forecaster Benniston Estareja said Quinta could also make landfall multiple times when moving west over the rest of southern Luzon, particularly southern Quezon, Marinduque and Batangas.

Quinta can also become a typhoon once it crosses the Western Philippine Sea, PAGASA said, adding that it will likely leave Philippine territory on Tuesday night.

The Quinta trough is forecast to bring storm conditions over the Bicol, Calabarzon, Marinduque, Romblon, Mindoro provinces and northern Samar regions. Flash floods or landslides are possible due to heavy rains.

The tropical storm trough will also cause moderate to heavy rains with gusty winds over Metro Manila, central Luzon, eastern Samar, Samar and Biliran.

The rest of the country will have cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms due to the weather system, PAGASA said.
