The Philippine Soccer League will delay the start of the 2020 season after nine people were found to be COVID-19 positive within the bubble in Seda Nuvali.
Five players and a coach from two clubs tested positive for RT-PCR tests on October 21, according to a statement released by the league on Saturday. Antigen testing was done on those who were in close contact with these people and yielded three more positive cases.
The league ran RT-PCR tests on October 16 and came back negative for everyone involved. All positive results occurred after the second round of RT-PCR testing held on October 21.
PFL Commissioner Coco Torre said protocols exist for this scenario.
“We have anticipated this scenario, so there is a set of health and safety protocols for incidents like this,” Torre said. “The important thing is that everyone continues to comply with the protocols that aim to prevent or minimize the spread of the virus.”
He added: “After checking, we have confirmed that those who tested positive admitted [they] he had close contact with the player who was the first to test positive. “
The PFL was supposed to start its season Sunday morning at the National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite. The PFL says they are looking to get the season going “in a few days.”
