MANILA, Philippines: Topex Robinson did it for her “son.”
Amid Calvin Abueva’s ongoing suspension, Phoenix gutted a tough 91-84 victory over Magnolia in the PBA Philippine Cup and Robinson couldn’t help but let his emotions out as he thought about the embattled forward.
Robinson said one of the reasons the Fuel Masters couldn’t afford to give up is because of the promise they made to Abueva, who has yet to play in the PBA despite meeting Board requirements. of Games and Entertainment.
“One of the reasons for not giving up is that when we leave the hotel we know that one of our children is not with you,” Robinson said as tears welled up during his media presence Friday at the University of Angeles.
“We told Calvin to keep playing, to stay positive. He really has it because he wants to play, but the best thing he can do is encourage us and it is difficult for a coach to know that one of your children is not with you.
Abueva is serving his suspension that began in June and has lasted until the PBA resumed the 2020 season.
Despite his status, Abueva was allowed to join Phoenix in the Clark bubble and was told to meet additional requirements imposed by GAB.
The only thing Abueva has left to complete is donning the suit and being included in the Fuel Masters game day lineup.
“We always do it for Calvin,” said Robinson, who has known Abueva since they were in San Sebastián. “Calvin wants to help us and the best thing he can do is practice, encourage us, pray for us.”
With Abueva on their minds against the Hotshots, the Fuel Masters went red hot in the fourth quarter and outscored their opponents 31-13 to finally end their two-game streak and improve to 3-2.
“I love Calvin, everyone loves Calvin and we are doing it for Calvin,” Robinson said.
