Phoenix Super LPG interim head coach Topex Robinson had every reason to be happy for Friday night, especially after his Fuel Masters stunned Magnolia to get back on track in Philippine Cup action. PBA 2020.
Matthew Wright and company came back up 17 points down in the third through a brilliant finish that saw them score 22 points in a row – a vivid display of energy in fact despite having a grueling week.
The Fuel Masters had just played their third game in five days. Robinson was asked how they could have that energy to defend themselves despite the physical cost of the schedule, and he was suddenly excited when he answered.
“I think one of the main reasons we don’t give up is … it’s very difficult to leave the gym or hotel knowing that one of your children is not with you.” said the 45-year-old mentor.
The son he referred to is, of course, Calvin Abueva, who remains suspended indefinitely by the PBA even though he has already met the requirements of the Board of Games and Entertainment.
Robinson then snapped talking about Abueva, who so far has only been allowed to join the team’s practices inside the bubble in the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.
“We told Calvin to keep playing, to stay positive. It’s very hard because he wants to play and he wants to contribute, but the best thing he can do is cheer us on. It is difficult for a coach to always leave the gym or the hotel knowing that one of your children is not with you in this battle.”Said Robinson, who has known Abueva since his days in San Sebastián.
“But again, we just didn’t want to give up. You don’t want to give up. We always do it for Calvin. It is very difficult, especially in these times. But winning it for Calvin, it’s really important to us”He continued.
“We don’t want to lose again and go back to the hotel knowing that Calvin wants to help us, and the best thing he can do is practice and pray for us and encourage us. I love Calvin. Everybody loves Calvin and we do it for Calvin. “
