MANILA, Philippines – Senators have asked the executive branch to clarify its position on restrictions in terms of public movement amid the pandemic.
“Can the government’s position be clarified to us if it is encouraging people to stay home, or if it is actually inviting people to go on vacation and sightseeing despite the steady increase in COVID-19 cases … ? ” read a document containing collected comments and senators’ queries on the implementation of the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, also called “Bayanihan 2”.
Under the Bayanihan Act 2, President Rodrigo Duterte must submit a monthly report to a Joint Oversight Committee of Congress. Duterte presented his first report on October 5.
Meanwhile, the Senate forwarded its comments and questions to the Office of the President on October 21, a copy of which was made available to the media by the Office of Senator Sonny Angara.
Angara chairs the Senate panel of the Congressional Joint Oversight Committee.
The compiled Senate comments also noted that the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country “has placed the Philippines in the list of the top 20 nations in the world with the most infections, even if a large part of our country and the economy has been under a prolonged lockdown for more than 200 days. “
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque previously invited the public to visit the newly reopened Boracay after months of closure.
“The message from the president is that we must live despite COVID-19. We can do that by taking care of our lives when we work, ”Roque had said in an online briefing from Boracay.
(The president’s message is that we have to live through the COVID-19 pandemic. We can do it if we worry about our lives while we work.
As of Thursday, the Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 363,888 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 312,333 recoveries and 6,783 deaths.
