A trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon is out. The animated film is set in a fantasy world where evil has reappeared after hundreds of years, and only a dragon, the last remaining dragon, can stop it.
It falls on the shoulders of Raya, a warrior, to find the dragon and save humanity.
The fantasy movie looks compelling. It’s good to see Kelly Marie Tran in a lead role, even if it’s just her voice. The story is a bit formulative, but it will work if delivered with the right beats and well-drawn characters. The premise seems like a nod to the classic fantasy cast of a lonely character on a quest to save the world.
Please note that Stripe and the Last Dragon is not made by Pixar Studios, but by Walt Disney, so the animation quality may not be top-notch. But then the studio has delivered Frozen too, and the trailer shows off some impressive visuals.
The official synopsis reads: “Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned, and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, throughout his journey, he will learn that it will take more than one dragon to save the world; trust and teamwork will also be needed. From directors Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, co-directors Paul Briggs and John Ripa, producers Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho, and voiced by Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and Awkwafina as the last dragon Sisu, Walt Disney Animation’s Raya Studios. and The Last Dragon hits theaters in the US in March 2021. “
