'Pepito' walks away; LPA near Mindanao likely to become tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Pepito may have left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), but the Low Pressure Area (LPA) approaching Mindanao could become another weather disturbance.

Weather forecasts Thursday afternoon from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) showed that the LPA detected 1,180 kilometers east of Mindanao. still out of PAR it can gather strength as it looms over the Pacific Ocean. The LPA is expected to enter the jurisdiction of the country in the next two to three days.

Pepito, on the other hand, was previously elevated to typhoon status and was last seen 470 kilometers west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Due to these weather systems, some areas in Luzon can still experience cloudy skies and occasional rain, especially on the western side such as Zambales, Bataan, Mindoro and Palawan, according to Pagasa. Areas in the extreme north of Luzon will have similar conditions, but this is due to surface wind flow from the northeast, he added.

For the rest of Luzon, Pagasa said, the weather will generally be better on Friday, as the weather in Metro Manila and Laoag will range from 25° C up to 33° C while it can reach 32° C in Tuguegarao and Legazpi.

In Visayas and Mindanao, Cebu and Tacloban will feel temperatures to 26° C up to 32° C while Zamboanga and Davao will experience it up to 33° C and 34° C, respectively, the state meteorological office noted.

There is still a gale warning over the entire north and west coast of Luzon, from Batanes to the Ilocos region, the western parts of central and southern Luzon, Palawan, as well as the Isabela and Aurora coastlines.

This means that fishermen and transshipment operators using small boats cannot set sail in the meantime.
