MANILA – An official from the Government’s National Working Group to End the Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) warned actress Liza Soberano about her ties to Gabriela Youth on Wednesday after participating in an online chat about the rights of women.
In a statement posted on the NTF-ELCAC Facebook page, Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. said that Soberano “is not an NPA” because he is simply defending the rights of women.
However, Parlade also told Soberano to cut his ties with Gabriela Youth.
“Let’s not label Liza Soberano. It is not fair to her. She is simply supporting the defense of women’s rights. She has to be protected in the exercise of her rights. Is she an NPA? No, of course not. Yet. No. So let’s help educate her and the other celebrities targeted by Malayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan (MAKIBAKA), the underground mass organization that hides under the Gabriela Women’s Party, “he said.

Parlade also issued a similar warning to Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.

In reaction to the statement, Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas criticized Parlade for red-labeling and “mansplanting” Sovereign, even after she urged the public not to.

How come These macho fascists have the audacity to explain to strong women and lecture them on what to do, and why do they seem so afraid of women using their platform to defend other women, she added.
The online firestorm came after Soberano joined a Gabriela Youth online forum as one of the special guests discussing the issues facing girls and young women amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Gabriela praised Soberano’s bravery against gender violence.
Brosas also paid tribute to Soberano’s commitment to women’s rights.
“Hindi terrorism ang paglaban sa abuse (Fighting abuse is not terrorism). Be a Sovereign Liza in this country led by sexist fascist officials. We call on more public figures to use their platforms to promote human rights, something that it is urgently needed today amid the multiple forms of violence promoted by the highest officials of the country.
