ALL of Metro Manila’s mayors have agreed to allow Rooster Mass or sunrise Masses, the Manila Metropolitan Development Authority (MMDA) said on Monday.
MMDA General Manager José Arturo García Jr. said the 17 members of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) unanimously agreed to allow the 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. Masses starting on December 16.
The celebration of the traditional church service was made possible after the shorter curfew hours in Metro Manila were approved.
“The fact that we are opening up does not mean that we should forget about health protocols,” Garcia said in Filipino during a briefing at the Palace with Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr.
Anticipating the increase in the number of parishioners, the MMC also recommended increasing the capacity of the church to 30 percent.
Churches are currently limited to 10 percent of capacity.
“We have noticed that when churches are only 10 percent full, parishioners tend to crowd outside the church,” he said.
The early morning Masses are celebrated from December 16 to 24.
The MMC recommended to the Interagency Working Group for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases a midnight to 4 am curfew in Metro Manila to replace the current one from 10 pm to 5 am, according to Garcia.
The city of Navotas, however, will maintain a curfew from 8 pm to 5 am.
The region’s 17 mayors also allowed residents ages 18 to 65 to leave their residences.
But Garcia appealed to the public “to avoid leisure travel and follow health and safety protocols for Covid-19.”
