The Maute group besieged the city for five months, beginning on May 23, 2017, leading to widespread destruction of property and infrastructure and loss of life in the Islamic city.

The siege forced thousands of local residents to be displaced and to live in temporary shelters provided by the government.

It was on October 17, 2017, when the president declared the city of Marawi liberated from terrorists after a five-month battle.

In June, the chairman of Task Force Bangon Marawi, Secretary of Housing, Eduardo del Rosario, assured that the rehabilitation of the war-torn city of Marawi would be completed within the planned December 2021 deadline despite the pandemic.
