MANILA, Philippines – Spokesman Lord Allan Velasco said Monday that he will meet with Taguig-Pateros representative Alan Peter Cayetano to personally extend his offer as vice president.
In an interview with the ABS-CBN news channel, Velasco said he wants to “give respect” to Cayetano, who recently resigned after his removal from office as president of the Chamber.
“It’s (offer) mainly because I just want to give him respect because he’s a former Speaker of the House,” Velasco said when asked about the offer.
But on whether Cayetano will assume the position, Velasco said: “We will know when I offer it to him personally. If I may, I’d like to talk to him again. “
The deputy speakers are the second highest ranking officials in the House of Representatives. They have the task of presiding over the House in the absence of the President.
When Cayetano was still president, he also mentioned that he offered Velasco a senior vice president position as part of their shared term agreement.
However, Cayetano said Velasco rejected the offer and instead chose to chair the House’s energy committee.
“Part of the term I invited Congressman Velasco to be the Senior Vice President. There is no such position. But we will create one to be a stand-in. To get closer to the congressmen, ”Cayetano said on Facebook live on October 5.
On October 12, 186 legislators overthrew Cayetano and elected Velasco as the new leader of the House.
Most legislators ratified Velasco’s victory the next day, leading to the resignation of Cayetano as president.
