MANILA, Philippines – Ilocos Sur will reopen to more tourists from Luzon starting Nov. 15 “once all health and safety systems and measures are in place,” the Department of Tourism (DOT) said on Sunday.
In a statement, DOT welcomed Ilocos Sur Governor Ryan Singson’s decision to reopen the province amid the outcry from tourists from Metro Manila.
The DOT also praised the initiative of the Ilocos Sur City Council “to return jobs to the tourist workforce from the kutcheros or carriage drivers to the waiters, the souvenir shops, to the tourist guides through the slow but sure of the province. “
Ilocos Sur first received the tourists through a travel corridor that links the province with the city of Baguio, La Unión, Pangasinan and Ilocos Norte.
To prevent the transmission of the coronavirus, the local governments of these provinces only allowed a limited number of tourists in their jurisdictions.
Some of the tourist destinations in Ilocos Sur are Vigan Heritage Village and Calle Crisologo, Plaza Salcedo Dancing Fountain, Bantay Bell Tower, Santa Maria Church and Plaza Burgos.
