MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Leni Robredo is calling for more urgent rehabilitation efforts and initiatives in Marawi City three years after local terrorists besieged the city.

Robredo remembered and honored the residents and government forces who lost their lives during the five-month hostilities in 2017 on Sunday.

“Today we remember the Marawi we lost, even as we renew the call for a more urgent approach to the rehabilitation process and recommit ourselves to rebuilding a more peaceful and prosperous city,” he said in a statement.

“Insha Allah, we can get up again,” he added.

He noted that thousands of Marawi city residents remain displaced and city buildings remain in ruins.

“The city has yet to regain something close to normal, much less its former glory as a cultural and economic center,” Robredo said.

He added that the siege of the city of Marawi serves as a reminder that violent extremism remains one of the greatest threats to society and, to address this, “frustrations must be met with compassion.”

In addition, the vice president said that equitable and inclusive progress must be achieved for the residents of the city of Marawi.

“Liberation involves much more than silencing the shots,” he added.
