MANILA, Philippines – There is nothing wrong with standing up for the marginalized and exploited, House Vice Speaker and Representative for Bayan Muna Carlos Zárate said Saturday after actress Liza Soberano was labeled red for participating in an online forum organized by Gabriela’s youth arm, a national alliance of women’s organizations in the Philippines.

In a statement, Zárate also expressed his support for the actress “for defending women and children, especially those who were victims of sexual exploitation.”

“We admire Liza’s courage and for speaking out against the abuses women and children face. We hope you continue this promotion and see a bigger picture of the problems and faces of oppression that many face. “

Zárate also responded to Soberano’s critics, saying: “As for those who attack and point at Liza, it is not wrong to speak for the marginalized and exploited.”

“However, what is wrong is keeping silent or ignoring others who are committing them. We must never be indifferent to injustice, “he added.

Soberano previously spoke at the Gabriela Youth webinar “Mga Tinig ni Nene: Reclaiming our voices on the International Day of the Girl,” where she was moved to remember the women she knew who were facing gender struggles.

But after her participation in the forum, Sovereign was labeled a communist by a vlogger named Maui Becker.
