MANILA, Philippines – Philippine tennister Alex Eala has risen to World No. 2 in the ITF World Junior Rankings.

The new highest ranking of Eala’s career came on the heels of her historic finish in the semi-finals at the 2020 French Open women’s tournament last week.

Before passing through Paris, Eala ranked fourth. She remains the only Asian player in the top 10 of the rankings.

The 15-year-old is second only to France’s Elsa Jacquemot, who actually defeated Eala in the semi-finals at Roland Garros.

Jacquemot eventually won the tournament and jumped five places from his sixth place in the standings to claim first place.

This time last year, Eala was outside the top 10 of the rankings at 13th.

A title in the 2020 Australian Open women’s doubles tournament propelled the 15-year-old to the top five of the rankings earlier this year.

Academy fellow Rafa Nadal has also started testing the waters on the professional circuit.

So far, Eala has joined a professional tournament in Monastir, Tunisia, before being sidelined due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Meanwhile, his brother Miko recently won a doubles title at an ITF Juniors tournament in Portugal earlier this week.
